John Perry: "I have an iPad and I think it sucks!"

Posted on October 14, 2011

Okay I have to admit it, in spite of the social upheaval it will bring, I have to say it, “I have an iPad and I think it sucks!”  There I said it, it is out of my system, and yet the memory of Steve Jobs is still intact.

As part of our Christmas Bonus last year Concentus Media Group bought every employee an iPad, after all it was all the rage back then just as the iPad II is now.  However, my iPad sits for the most part unused.  Now first off you may think, well Perry is just an older guy and not very tech savvy.  Maybe partially true, but I bought my first Macintosh in 1984, how many of you can say that, and I have tinkered around with PCs most of my adult life, so there.

The reason my iPad gathers dust and even has a few cobwebs on it is what does the iPad do that my Droid smart phone can’t do?  Except for screen size, I am mystified about the allure of the iPad. I live and breathe with my Droid smart phone; it has become my quintessential business tool.  As far as I am concerned the iPad is just a larger, admittedly attractive, but non-working phone.  What’s the point?

Now I know I am swimming upstream against overwhelming public sentiment, but I really don’t get it.  For full disclosure, after nearly a year I finally saw a practical business use for iPad.  We are using an iPad as part of a teleprompter system for video shooting.  Finally something to thank the late Steve Jobs for!

All you Apple worshippers out there, tell me how I am missing the boat, drop me an message on how the iPad can be used for practical business use.
